The Best Brunch Spots in Downtown Jersey City
Nothing against dinner, but there’s just something about brunch. It’s full of promise and excitement. It can be sweet or savory. You can pretty much pair any drink you want with your meal and it just works- coffee, tea, mimosa, Bloody Mary, wine, water, orange juice, matcha, you get the idea. The day can really go any way you want it to post brunch. Continue the party into the night and regret being born the next day? Been there. Sometimes it’s been totally worth it, buuuut- do you know what else is cool? Having a full day by 4pm on a Saturday, feeling satisfied enough to head home, throwing on some sweats, a facemask, lighting a candle, and staying in the rest of the night with your latest Netflix binge (Schitt’s Creek for this girl). Amen and hallelujah. I feel pretty hashtag blessed that Jersey City offers countless bomb brunch options and have myself that exact Saturday scenario on the regular. If you live in JC, or happen to find yourself here one weekend, I suggest checking out the following spots:
Madame Claude’s is hands down one of my top three restaurants in Jersey City. It’s authentically French with a brick interior, cozy nooks, and a perfectly curated jazz playlist on loop. The food is consistently delicious and the wine and beer menu is extensive, serving up options you won’t find just anywhere. The owner (from France if you aren’t sold yet) works her ass off and is incredibly gracious and interested in your experience. Get the grilled hanger steak with guac, salsa and eggs or the french toast- hell, get both if you’re not driving ;).
Another delightful French restaurant with a quaint interior and amazing food. I’ve been here a bunch of times and it’s never been “off”. Added bonus: there’s outdoor seating and it’s attached to a lovely wine bar if you need to wait.
I’ve been to Mathews several times but never in time for the brunch menu until recently (woops) and was really impressed. We split the avocado toast and smoked salmon, both were equally bomb. The avocado toast was served with grilled asparagus, peas, pickled shallots, and breakfast radish and I’m fairly certain I never want another version for as long as I live. It would be remiss not to mention that I had the best glass of rosé maybe ever. Overall 10/10.
I like Roman Nose a lot but never considered it a brunch spot, so was pleasantly surprised when I found myself there one Sunday and have continued to go back ever since. Get the pizza all’uovo and an aperol spritz. Honorable mention- the lemon ricotta olive oil pancakes and frittata.
Ugh, I love this place so much. I’m going to be bold and say it’s my favorite spot in all of JC. It’s away from the chaos of Newark Street, so there’s less “riff raff” aka people, which is always nice. I don’t even know if I would necessarily coin it as a traditional brunch spot but it’s a solid choice any time of day. If you’re feeling bold, get the Paulus Hook Burger with truffle fries and thank me later.
Old faithful strikes again. Taqueria hands down has the best tacos in JC (and there are A LOT of Mexican restaurants here). They have a really great brunch menu and basically give the drinks away for free. I’m pretty sure the Bloody Mary’s and mimosas are $3 each. The pork taco is my favorite, but you really can’t go wrong here. Enjoy your meal on the back patio for the whole five star experience.
Really cute place tucked back in the beautiful Hamilton Park area of Jersey City. I’ve been here for dinner as well but definitely prefer the brunch menu and overall vibe during the day. Get the pork belly buns and potato goat cheese pierogies to start and take it from there.
